For music teachers

Hear every student between lessons.

Set a piece after class. Students record their takes on a phone, you grade each take with a letter and a comment, and reply by singing or playing it back.

Free for up to 10 students. Studio plan: up to 30 students for $19 a month, for one teacher.

A student's phone showing a recording assignment: the take handed in, graded A, with the teacher's comment and a recorded reply to play.

How a week works

  • Live class, one link

Put your Zoom or Google Meet link on the weekly timetable. Students join from their own page, from 15 minutes before it starts.

  • Set the piece

Attach your own recording of how it should sound, with the words or notes. Students play it as often as they like.

  • Takes recorded at home

Students record on a phone in the browser, with nothing to install. Echo cancellation and noise suppression are switched off, so a backing track, a drone or a piano in the room is not filtered away.

  • A letter, a comment and a reply

Grade each take from A+ to C with a comment, and reply by singing or playing it back. Each take is graded on its own, and you can compare with the one before.

The teacher's page for one take, graded: the recording to play, the letter A, the comment and a recorded reply, with the form to change them.

For families

  • Children learn under a parent's account, with the parent's consent. The parent chooses who is learning, hears every take and the teacher's feedback, and is emailed about grades and reminders instead of the child.
  • Recordings are private: only the student, the parent and the teacher's staff can play them.
  • No ads, and no analytics on the pages students use.
  • Read what we keep about children before you invite a family.

What else is in it

  • Lessons

Text, audio and video lessons, in the order you set.

  • A timetable for each batch

Weekly sessions with a class link for each, and a register for each day.

  • Attendance and progress

See who came, who has handed in a take, and who is waiting for feedback.

  • Certificates

Issue a certificate of completion that anyone can check on a public page.

What it does not do

The Skill Site does not send invoices or take payment for lessons. Keep the tool you use for that. It is for teaching and feedback.

What it costs

Prices are in US dollars a month, excluding taxes. Every paid plan has every feature.

  • Free

Up to 10 students and every feature but your own web address, with no time limit. One person runs it.

  • Studio: $19 a month

For one teacher: up to 30 students, 10 GB of files and no other staff. With more than 30 active students in a month, or a second teacher, it renews as Cohort 50 at $149 a month.

  • Cohort 50: $149 a month

For a school with several teachers: up to 50 students and as many staff as you need. $89 at the founding price.

Questions and answers

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Students record, replay and hand in a take from the phone browser, and play your reply there. If the recording is lost on the way, the page says so and keeps the take so the student can send it again.

Can students sing or play along with a backing track?

Yes. Recording keeps echo cancellation and noise suppression off, so an instrument playing in the room is kept rather than filtered out. Students can also upload a file they recorded in another app.

Who can hear the recordings?

The student, the teacher's staff who may grade that take and, for a child, the parent whose account they learn under. Recordings are stored privately and played only through a signed-in page, never from a public address. The pages students use carry no ads or analytics.

What happens when I stop?

If your Studio subscription ends, your organisation continues on the free plan, with up to 10 students and every feature but your own web address, and nothing is erased. You can subscribe again at any time.

Can children use it?

Yes. Children learn under a parent's account, with the parent's consent. The parent can withdraw consent for each organisation at any time, which ends the child's place there; once no consent is left, the child's records are erased.
