Graded coding that fits the systems you already run

Keep your LMS and add graded coding quizzes to it through LTI 1.3, with grades sent back to its gradebook. Run SCORM packages in lessons, send learners' results to your learning record store as xAPI, and embed graded exercises in your own site through the API.

Add graded coding to your LMS (LTI 1.3)

An admin connects your LMS once, on the LMS page of your staff menu. After that an instructor in the LMS adds a coding quiz from your organisation's question bank like any other activity. Learners open it from their course, write their code in The Skill Site, and their grade goes back to the LMS gradebook when it is marked.

  • LTI 1.3 with LTI Advantage: deep linking to add quizzes, and Assignment and Grade Services to return grades.
  • Tested end to end with Moodle 4.5.
  • Learners who come through the LMS count as active learners, once each, like any other learner.

SCORM packages and xAPI

SCORM: upload a SCORM 1.2 or 2004 package as a lesson block, beside your own lessons and code. It runs from a separate domain of ours, so its scripts cannot reach learners' accounts. Completion, pass or fail, the best score and where the learner stopped are kept, and staff see each learner's result.

xAPI: connect your learning record store in Settings, and The Skill Site sends an xAPI 1.0.3 statement when a learner completes a lesson, a quiz or assignment is graded, a SCORM package is completed, passed or failed, and a certificate is issued. If your store cannot be reached, statements are tried again at growing intervals, up to twenty times; one your store refuses is set aside.

API and embeddable exercises

For a provider with its own site or app: an admin creates an API key on the API page, then list questions, run code and hand in answers for grading over a JSON API. An embed link puts one graded coding exercise in your own page for one learner, and reports the grade to that page and to your webhook.

The API never sends hidden tests. Each organisation can make 30 runs and 30 hand-ins a minute.

Everyday connections

  • Google sign-in

Learners and staff sign in with their Google account as well as with a password, and LMS users through the LMS.

  • Roster import

Import learners from a CSV file straight into a batch. New accounts get an email to set a password, or sign in with Google.

  • Zoom and Teams

Give each weekly class its meeting link, then fill in the day's register from the meeting's participant report.

  • Calendars

Export a batch's timetable as a calendar file for Outlook, Google Calendar or Apple Calendar.

  • CSV exports

Progress, quiz results, assignment grades and attendance export as CSV, for spreadsheets, e-portfolios and reports.

  • Email reminders

Learners are reminded a day before work is due or a quiz closes, and told when work is graded, unless you turn emails off.

Questions and answers

Which LMSs does the LTI tool work with?

It is built to the LTI 1.3 and LTI Advantage standards and tested end to end with Moodle 4.5. Canvas, Brightspace and Blackboard support LTI 1.3 too, but we have not yet tested with them or been certified by 1EdTech; tell us which you use and we will set it up with you.

Do learners need a separate account for the LTI tool?

No. Each LMS user gets an account of their own the first time they launch, kept apart from any account they already have with us. Learners join your organisation as learners; LMS instructors add quizzes and see results inside the LMS.

Which SCORM versions do you support?

SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 packages, uploaded as a lesson block, up to 100 MB zipped. Progress, completion, scores and the learner’s place are saved, and staff see results per learner with a CSV export.

What does the API do?

List your questions and the shared question bank, run code, hand in code for grading, and make a one-learner link to an embeddable exercise. Each grade is posted to your webhook, signed. Ask hello@theskillsite.com for the API reference.

Can we export grades into OneFile, Aptem or Bud?

Through CSV today. We do not yet write those systems’ own import formats; tell us which you use and what it needs.

Do you support SAML single sign-on?

Not yet. Learners and staff sign in with a password, with Google, or through your LMS.
